This National Women’s Day, Chocolates By Tomes have it worked out with this red velvet hot chocolate recipe infused with Nitida Merlot.

You love red velvet cake, but you also love wine and hot chocolate. So why not combine all 3? Sound crazy? So did many revolutionary women in history, but look at what they have accomplished. Let’s salute women with this 2-stage recipe which features a decadent red velvet encrusted cream topping, atop a steamy flagrant blend of hot chocolate infused with red wine:

The drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup of Nitida 2017 Merlot
  • 45 g dark chocolate,finely chopped
  • 15 g chocolate
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp red food colouring
  • A pinch of salt
  • Slice of red velvet cake
  • Cream cheese whipped cream (recipe below)

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk over medium-high heat until hot and steaming, but not boiling.
  2. Reduce heat to low and whisk in wine, salt and chocolate until melted and warm, stirring constantly so that the chocolate doesn’t burn.
  3. Remove from the heat and whisk in vanilla extract and red food colouring.
  4. Pour into a mug and top with a dollop of cream cheese whipped cream, or pipe it on for a more delicate swirl. Sprinkle with red velvet cake crumbs, if desired.

Cream cheese whipped cream:

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup cream
  • 1/2 cupcream cheese
  • 1/2cup  sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Chill a metal bowl and a whisk in freezer for a few minutes. When chilled, pour the cream into the bowl and whip until peaks form. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat cream cheese with sugar, salt and vanilla until creamy. Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mix until fully combined and fluffy.
  3. Refrigerate until ready to use.
